This session describes how Geomatics Science is undergoing tremendous change and rapid progress especially within the past decade. The session presents the inherent need and external drivers which are influencing this shift – from traditional Surveying and Mapping Science to a completely modern approach via Geomatics Science. Cutting-edge technologies such as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Smart Cities and Global Sustainability are addressed. Collaborative new combinations of Geo-spatial Information Science (GSIS) with the social geography, ubiquitous point clouds, positioning and indoor navigation, Volunteered Geographic Information, global healthcare, and other factors are explored. An attempt will be made to stimulate this novel concept, method, and theory in a comprehensive way to reform the traditional Surveying and Mapping Discipline, realizing the geospatial intelligence. In addition, efforts to globally disseminate the new concept will be introduced through the well-established journal Geo-spatial Information Science (GSIS), which will be beneficial not only to the academic community but also to the general technician, decision-maker, and the public.
